Client: Koret Building
Location: San Francisco, California
Project Value: $20.1 million
Services Provided: Seismic retrofit; historic renovation

On October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area. The quake killed 63 people throughout northern California, injured 3,757, and left scores of buildings badly damaged. The Koret Building in downtown San Francisco was structurally compromised by the earthquake. On the verge of collapse, the unreinforced masonry structure was condemned by building inspectors. Evans Team USA was hired to perform a dramatic, state-of-the-art seismic retrofit – without removing the building’s splendid architectural façade. Evans Team USA’s versatile, experienced staff of engineers, architects and project managers completed the challenging retrofit, allowing the Koret Building to reopen as a much safer, more stable facility.
