The Indianapolis Athletic Club, a historic landmark originally built in 1923, incurred a fire that caused $9 million in damage. The third and fourth floors, containing the club’s restaurants, ballrooms and meeting rooms, were destroyed. Smoke and water ruined many of the finishes on the remaining floors. Every year in May the club is home to numerous dignitaries attending the Indianapolis 500. The fire occurred just four months before the next race, so a rapid reconstruction was required. Complicating matters was the need for a historic renovation with strict attention being paid to architectural detail.
The Indianapolis Athletic Club chose Evans Team USA to rebuild the club because of our track record of successful high-speed renovations, as well as our experience in historic rehabilitation. We worked in partnership with the club’s architects to complete the renovation within an extraordinarily compressed timetable. The Indianapolis Athletic Club reopened in time to host its annual guests for the Indianapolis 500. The project won the prestigious Award for Excellence for Historical Renovation from the Commercial Builders Council, as well as the Award for Excellence from the Architectural Wordworking Institute. The club’s architect was quoted as saying, “The Indianapolis Athletic Club is better than it was before. Quality was never compromised to meet the schedule.” |
