hotelThe power of Hurricane Ike was on full display in Pasadena, Texas. Three structures on the grounds of First United Methodist Church received substantial damage from winds and water. Evans Team USA tackled the massive reconstruction project, despite the lack of available tradesmen, critical resources, and power in the wake of this general calamity. We repaired the church’s nursing home, daycare facility and 80,000-square-foot main church facility by replacing roofing systems, repairing the ceilings, restoring massive sanctuary doors, repairing the HVAC system, eplacing floor coverings, replacing solid wood pews, instituting massive high-tech drying of the facility, repairing the massive antique pipe organ, and painting repaired surfaces. The main church building, which contains the sanctuary, fellowship hall, a gymnasium, administrative offices, two atriums, and an additional daycare facility, proved even more challenging. A great deal of demolition was required in preparation for the repair, and it was crucial to extract bound moisture from the saturated structures. This massive operation involved an elaborate moisture extraction process that required not only our utilization of our immense inventory of drying and specialty moisture identification equipment, but the precise placement of the equipment based on calculations in accordance with the ANSI/IICRC S500 standards. Other elements of the reconstruction included:

  • Demolition of all damaged and wet areas.
  • Removal of drywall, floor coverings, and damaged pews.
  • Removal of the damaged pipe organ console, copper clad roofing and standing seam copper clad wall siding, wet roofing insulation, solid maple gym/sports area flooring, all furniture, equipment and contents in the affected areas.
  • Repaired and rebalanced all HVAC mechanical systems.
  • Replaced all audio/visual equipment, clad roofing and siding, roofing insulation, and affected drywall areas.
  • Replaced and installed the pipe organ console, acoustical panels, all water-damaged suspended ceiling systems, and solid maple gym/sports area flooring.
  • Purchased and installed custom solid wood pews.
  • Refinished 16 massive sanctuary main entrance doors and refinished the chancel rail.
Evans Team USA completed the $4.4 million reconstruction of First United Methodist Church by the December deadline, three months after Hurricane Ike, allowing the church’s annual holiday services and activities to take place as scheduled.
